iPhone 18 Pro Review: Apple’s Biggest Upgrade Is Behind the Camera

Apple’s latest flagship smartphones have arrived, and the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max bring several meaningful upgrades under a design that remains familiar. Rather than completely redesigning the iPhone, Apple has focused this generation on camera flexibility, performance, battery life and AI capabilities.

The result is a phone that feels more like a refined professional tool than a revolutionary redesign.

iPhone 18 Pro: What’s New?

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max continue with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively. Both feature Super Retina XDR OLED panels with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display technology and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness.

The phones use an aluminium unibody design and are available in four colours: Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

One of the most noticeable changes is the smaller Dynamic Island, while the overall design remains quite close to the previous generation.

A20 Pro: Apple’s New Performance Monster

The biggest internal upgrade is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.

Apple says the A20 Pro combines a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The chip is paired with a new-generation vapour chamber designed to improve thermal performance during demanding workloads.

Apple claims graphics performance can be up to 40% faster than the previous-generation iPhone 17 Pro.

For everyday users, that level of performance may be difficult to notice immediately. Apps already run extremely smoothly on recent iPhones. However, the extra performance should matter more for gaming, video editing, on-device AI and other demanding workloads.

The Camera Is the Real Upgrade

The biggest reason to consider the iPhone 18 Pro may be its camera system.

Apple has introduced a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Users can select between four aperture settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0.

This is a significant change because aperture control gives photographers more creative control over exposure, depth of field and low-light photography.

The Pro camera system also includes:

  • 48MP Fusion Main camera
  • 48MP Ultra Wide camera
  • 48MP Telephoto camera
  • Up to 8x optical-quality zoom
  • Up to 40x digital zoom
  • 48MP macro photography
  • Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance
  • ProRAW support

Apple has also added more advanced manual controls directly into the native Camera app.

For people who actually use their iPhone as a camera or video-production device, these changes are more meaningful than another small processor upgrade.

New 18MP Center Stage Front Camera

The front camera has also received an upgrade.

The iPhone 18 Pro features an 18MP Center Stage camera, designed to keep subjects properly positioned during photos and video calls.

The system can automatically track people and adjust framing, making it particularly useful for video calls, group selfies and content creators.

Battery Life Gets a Major Boost

Battery life is another major highlight.

Apple claims the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver **up to 43 hours of video playback**, making it the longest-lasting iPhone yet. The Pro Max can also gain up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes when paired with a compatible power adapter.

Apple says the Pro Max can provide up to 6 additional hours of video playback compared with the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

For heavy users, this could be one of the most practical upgrades of the entire generation.

Siri AI Finally Becomes More Important

Apple is also pushing its AI strategy further with **Siri AI**, which is integrated into the new generation of Apple Intelligence features.

The new Siri is designed to be more conversational and personal, while Apple is also using the additional Neural Engine performance for on-device intelligence.

However, Apple's AI features are still rolling out gradually, and availability can vary by language and region.

iPhone 18 Pro India Price

Apple's official Indian store lists the iPhone 18 Pro from ₹1,79,900 for the 256GB model. Higher storage configurations go substantially higher, with the 2TB version listed at ₹3,29,900.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are scheduled to be available in India from September 18, with pre-orders beginning September 12 at 5:30 PM IST.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: Should You Upgrade?

If you already own an iPhone 17 Pro, the upgrade isn't necessarily essential.

The design remains familiar, and the previous generation is already extremely powerful.

However, the new variable-aperture camera, improved battery life, A20 Pro chip, faster charging and enhanced AI capabilities make the iPhone 18 Pro considerably more attractive for photographers, creators, gamers and professionals.

For owners of older iPhones, the upgrade is much easier to justify.

Our Verdict

⭐ 4.5/5

The iPhone 18 Pro is Apple's most capable iPhone yet, but it's an evolution rather than a revolution.

The camera system is the standout feature, particularly the variable aperture on the 48MP main camera. The A20 Pro provides enormous performance headroom, while the improved battery life makes the Pro Max especially appealing to power users.

The biggest drawback remains the price. At ₹1,79,900 for the entry-level Pro in India, this is firmly a premium device.

Pros

  • Excellent camera system
  • Variable-aperture main camera
  • Extremely powerful A20 Pro chip
  • Excellent battery life
  • 120Hz ProMotion display
  • Advanced AI capabilities
  • 2TB storage option
  • Improved charging speeds

Cons

  • Very expensive in India
  • Design changes are relatively minor
  • Many upgrades won't feel dramatic for iPhone 17 Pro owners
  • Some AI features depend on availability and language

Final Verdict

If you want the best iPhone available right now, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the obvious choice.

But if you're using an iPhone 17 Pro, upgrading purely for performance may not make financial sense. The camera improvements and battery upgrades are the strongest reasons to make the jump.

For everyone coming from an older iPhone, however, the iPhone 18 Pro represents one of Apple's most complete flagship packages yet.
